Throughout Mikhail Bulgakov’s life his works were subject to censorship. Living under the Stalinist regime, Bulgakov’s witty surrealist works satirizing Russian society were often censored or shut down entirely. Bulgakov manage to survive by making an unexpected fan, Joseph Stalin himself. Though Stalin would never let Bulgakov’s works be read in their entirety he was a self proclaimed fan of his and made sure no harm would fall Bulgakov. Even after their deaths Bulgakov’s work continued to be suppressed under the thumb of the Russian government until recently.
